Back to top Bryan Robson: Captain Marvel
Bryan Robson is one of the greatest players to have ever pulled on the famous shirt of Manchester United, making nearly 500 appearances and scoring 99 goals. Captain Marvel spent 13 glorious years at Old Trafford and was instrumental in United's revival as one of the great powers of English football. A no-nonsense, tough-tackling midfielder with superb passing skills, Robson earned 90 England caps and captained his country 65 times, a record only beaten by Bobby Moore and Billy Wright.

Robson first tasted league football at West Brom, making his debut in April 1975. He flourished under Ron Atkinson, and when Big Ron left to take charge of Manchester United Robson joined. At Old Trafford he made the famous number seven shirt, previously worn by George Best, his own. Robson was given the United captaincy and under his inspirational leadership two Premiership titles, three FA Cups and a European Cup Winners' Cup found their way back to Old Trafford.
As well as working tirelessly in the United engine room, Robson had an eye for the crucial goal. He scored twice in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Brighton in 1983 and another brace in the Cup Winners Cup quarter-final victory over mighty Barcelona. By the time Robson finally left United to join Middlesbrough at the end of the 1993-94 season he was the longest-serving captain in the club's history.

Robson is arguably one of the most influential players to wear the three lions on his chest. He made his England debut in February 1980 and was a major factor in England qualifying for the 1982 and 1986 World Cups and Euro 88. His goal after just 27 seconds against France in 1982 was the fastest in World Cup history, a record that stood for another 20 years. Robson was the most complete English player of his generation. In 1990 he was awarded the OBE for services to football and in 2002 he was made an inaugral member of the English Football Hall of Fame.
