Andrew Johnson is one of the most feared and respected strikers in England with a career strike rate of a goal in every three games. He has been a key player in Everton's re-emergence as a genuine Premiership threat and the Goodison Park club's challenge to Liverpool's dominance on Merseyside. His blistering pace, physical strength and ability to score from anywhere have catapulted him into the international arena with the promise of a long England career in front of him.
Johnson joined Birmingham City in 1997 and after 83 appearances for the Blues moved to Crystal Palace in 2002. It wasn't long before he had won over the Eagles' fans with a hat-trick in Palace's 5-0 demolition of rivals Brighton. Palace won promotion to the Premiership in 2004 with the help of Johnson's 32 goals which made him the leading scorer in the division. Despite spending just one season in the top flight Johnson netted 21 times to make him the highest scoring English player.
In 2005 Johnson was voted into Palace's Centenary XI and shortly afterwards moved to Everton for £8.6 million, making him Everton's most expensive player ever and Palace's record sale. He netted on his debut and then, to the delight of Toffees fans - scored a brace in Everton's 3-0 derby victory over Liverpool. He has become one of the most highly regarded players among Everton fans, who appreciate his hard work and eye for the crucial goal. Less than half way through his initial contract he signed a new long-term deal to confirm his commitment to Everton.
Johnson's international career began on a wave of popular opinion following his impressive performances in the 2004-05 season. He was called up to play against the Netherlands in February 2005 and was put on stand-by for the 2006 World Cup squad. His recent move to Fulham spelt an end to a successful period for the Toffee's that won't be forgotten.
